Practical Practices for Fasting and Prayer

  1. Have a specific purpose for the fast.
  2. Start slowly: If this is your first time to fast, start slowly (fasting from specific items, fasting for one meal, fasting for one day, etc.) and move up to longer fasts over a period of time.
  3. Set a definite beginning and ending time. If it is an extended fast, be accountable to someone.
  4. Begin the fast with the resolve that it is going to have an effect.
  5. Plan ahead – look at your schedule and make it a part of your planning for that week (set specific prayer times, etc.)
  6. Set aside specific time for the Word and Prayer. Natural times would include your usual meal times.
  7. Worship and sing through the day to "feed" your spirit.
  8. Keep a journal of what you receive from the Lord throughout the fast.
  9. Walk by faith and not by feelings. Focus on the fact that you are obeying God. If you are fasting for a longer time than before, you may experience some physical discomforts (headache, etc.) Decide ahead of time that you will let these times lead you to desperation for God.
  10. Always drink lots of water and/or juice.
  11. You may need more rest than normal.
  12. Break the fast with healthy food – soup, or broth, break, fruit, etc.
  13. Make it a part of your regular lifestyle.

Who Should Not Fast?

  1. Those on medication which prevents it.
  2. Those with specific medical conditions (hypoglycemia, pregnant women, etc.). Consult your physician if you have any questions.
  3. People who have hard physical jobs need to be sure and drink plenty of liquids (up to 64oz.) of water/juice a day.

NOTE: Fasting is healthy for the average person! It is not harmful when done properly.

Fasting Events at Eastside

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and will dine with him, and he with me." Revelation 3:20

Dear Eastside Community Church,

Greatest Gift Offering 2013

The Christmas season is almost here. The celebration of Christ’s birth is a reminder of God’s generous love expressed toward us. In addition to the gifts we exchange with those we love, this is a great time of year to put feet to our faith and show our community the love of Jesus.

Last year, the Eastside Family responded by giving over $96,000 in this effort. I continue to be amazed by the spirit of generosity that is demonstrated through this body of believers in fulfilling our vision, mission, and values in the community.

This year we have established a goal of $100,000 and we are inviting you to prayerfully consider giving your best gift to help us reach this goal. We will use 100% of this offering to fund the following projects:

·      O & O Fund: “O & O” stands for Opportunities and Obstacles

       - Opportunities – vital resources for ministry (i.e. equipment, furnishings, and outreach)

       - Obstacles – Buildings & Grounds (repair or potential replacement of furnaces, air conditioners, etc.)

·      Missions Support:

       - TUMI Site Support (The Urban Ministry Institute/Pastor Training in Central & South America)

       - Leadership Development & Church Planting

       - Hope Ranch For Women (Rescue Ministry for Abused and Exploited Women)

       - “One Child Matters” (Human Trafficking & Rescue Projects in India)

On December 15, 2013, we will receive the “Greatest Gift Offering” during both of our weekend services. We will provide special giving envelopes again this year and encourage everyone to come prepared to give on that day.

If you will be out of town on December 15, or if you’d like to go ahead and donate now, you can access our online giving option here. It’s safe, secure and simple to use.

Please pray about participating and jump right in with us. God has given us a great mission, and we’re blessed to be able to join him in reaching our community for Christ and advancing the Gospel around the world.

Much Blessing,

Dennis Sig first name
