On January 3, 2011, Mikala was taken to the doctor for a routine check-up. After lab tests, the doctors discovered Mikala's white blood count was dangerously high. She was soon admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Later she was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (A.L.L.). Background Story Mikala is 8 years old and very active and full of life. She loves soccer, and is known as one of the toughest girls on the field. She is in 3rd grade. She has a younger brother, Braden, and two awesome, loving parents, Doug and Micki. Mikala's strong will and competitiveness on the soccer field is already helping her fight her new opponent, leukemia. Although this came as a devastating surprise, she is fighting and being very tough! Visit Mikala's Caring Bridge website for weekly updates! Micki winning the Be A Gift award at the Women' Conference: Designed for Life September 25, 2011!!! Thank you, Micki, for being such an inspiration!
Update for Mikala from March 9, 2011. Part of Mikala’s story is that she needed a blood transfusion but the area blood bank did not have her blood type. As a result, blood was transferred from Salina for Mikala. In order to help raise awareness for blood donations, we held a blood drive at Eastside on February 26 - here is a thank you from the Red Cross: "Thank you all so very much for the hard work in organizing the blood drive. It was a very successful day for the Red Cross! We had 157 donors sign in, even more impressive is that 79 were first time donors! Usually that many first time donors only happens at a high school! Please let all of the wonderful volunteers and donors from the church know how much we appreciate their work today! Let me know if you have any questions or need additional information!" Teresa E.
